Walmart Streaming Player Display

The ask: In a cluttered streaming player aisle, surrounded by competitors, how could we make Roku players stand out? With so many Roku streaming players to chose from and the products usually locked behind a glass case, we needed to both prove Roku was the obvious choice over Apple TV and Fire TV, but also which Roku product was right for each shopper.

The how: I knew our product marketing leads would want to include every product benefit we have, creating a cluttered and confusing experience for shoppers. To combat this, I collaborated with our design lead to outline our must-haves, and brainstormed ways we could present this information in a scannable way.

 

Best Buy Roku TV Display

The ask: Buying a TV is an overwhelming process. With so many brands, models, specs, and sizes to choose from, it’s easy for a shopper to get frustrated. To help address this confusion, we were tasked with creating a Roku TV display at Best Buy that highlighted why Roku TVs were the right choice in general, and then how to choose the right one for each shopper.

The how: After extensive research, we knew that price, size, and picture quality were the main three factors shoppers considered when purchasing a TV. I broke this down in easy to follow steps for the right panel, while ensuring the left panel easily communicated why shoppers should consider a Roku TV over any other smart TV. When a shopper presses the OK button in the middle of the Roku D-pad, they’ll see a picture quality demo on the screen above. I’ll admit, the remote upsell doesn’t quite fit the purchasing journey we were addressing here, but we were able to accommodate this exec request in a way that still feels natural.

 

Product Packaging

The story: The streaming player boxes below reflect a total redesign and simplification, led by myself and the retail design team in collaboration with product marketing.

The how: Every package decision was a result of many rounds of qualitative and quantitative research. When developing this redesign, our emphasis was making the step-ups more obvious and help shoppers make an easier decision at the shelf. In doing so, we condensed the copy on the back of box dramatically and used icons to communicate the features at a glance.
